
Dr. Sujata – Epitome of dedication and Selfless Service
Personal Life and Education: The second among three daughters, Dr. Sujata comes from a highly educated family. Her father, a doctorate in Upanishads and History, retired as Class I Officer in the Punjab Education Department. Her mother is a highly intellectual homemaker. Her family been has always very supportive of her and encouraged her to pursue her dreams. Dr. Sujata holds a Doctoral degree in psychology and a postgraduate .degree in guidance and counseling from Punjab University Chandigarh. After completing her studies, Dr.Sujata wanted to become a counselor. She started her career as a project officer in UNICEF. Dr. Sujata also got to work with Metro Group of Hospitals where she came across patients with anxiety, trauma, phobias, and other emotional distresses. Perhaps she would have remained content as a senior consultant/counselor had it not been for a group of differently abled children who approached her for guidance. The seed for Tapan Rehabilitation Society was laid. Tapan Rehabilitation Society, a nonprofit organization in Nilokheri, Karnal, that caters to special needs of differently abled children and young adults is the brain child of Dr. Sujata. She very philosophically says, “We don’t choose our occupations but our occupation chooses us.”
DEDICATED SOCIAL ACT VIST : Dr.Sujata founder Director of charitable voluntary organization for differently abled(1994), “Tapan Rehabilitation Society”. In 1995, a team of doctors, educationists, social workers, and businessmen joineed hands with Dr. Sujata in her mission and today the institution has reached the heights of international repute with 200 children. A residential institution for children and young adults ranging in age from 3 to 50 years old. There are now 200 students including those with Learning Disabilities, Speech and Hearing Impaiment, Intellectually Disabled, Autism, and Cerebral Palsy and Down Syndrome etc.. The center is educating these children and teaching them skills that will help them to integrate into the day-to-day life of their communities. By offering D.Ed. and B.Ed. in Special Education for those dedicated young boys and girls who are interested to equip themselves as teachers for the specially abled people. The institution has also become the study center of NIOS for disabled. Tapan rehabilitation society has also been declared SNAC by National Trust under (Ministry of Social Justice &Empowerment Govt. of India). Additionally, She has now also taken on the responsibility of empowering women and is teaching them skills such as stitching embroidery, candile making, and computers. Dr. Sujata has been regular in conducting counseling sessions with the people in need and has cured and given strength to many people suffering from cancer and depression too.
Spirituality: First art of living mentor in district Karnal. Though the journey of serving humanity was quite satisfying for Dr. Sujata but being a very sensitive and spiritual person, dealing with suffering humanity had left a deep impact on her mind. For her spiritual journey started in 2001, she joined The Art of Living program. When asked what impact the program had on her, she smilingly said, “Before doing this course I used to smile very rarely but now the smile is rarely missing from my face.” She found a better vision of life and understood relations from different perspective and she was ready to take on al! the challenges that her occupation offered.
In 2002 she became the first Art of Living teacher in Karnal and started conducting programs for children in the Rehabilitation centers for destitute women in Nari Niketans, for police personnel at the Police Training Center, and for inmates in prisons and other CCl’s. She has helped thousands to find joy in life, including the children at the rehab. centers.
Publications: Apart from her busy and hectic schedule, Dr. Sujata continued her passion for writing and has published the following books, which were released recently by the Vice-Chancellor of Punjabi Univ. Patiala, Governor, Haryana and Commissioner social justice and empowerment and chief justice of Haryana & Punjab High Court consecutively. Re-incarnation- “a reality”, Springs of Reflection, Struggle That never ends, Kranti ke Agradoot, Sikhon ke Advitye Balidan, Lahrein, Awakening ” combating depression” are some of her publications.
Recognition and Awards: A self-motivated woman who believes in setting her own targets and achieving them, Dr.sujata has become a role model for the woman of today. She has been conferred the “Woman of the Year” Award twice by the District Legal Services Authority, Government of Haryana.
She has also been nominated by the Government of Haryana as the Brand ambassador from Karnal for the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign. She has won many awards on women’s Day as “Empowered women” award. Giving her 100% to the task at hand and at the same time remaining detached has helped Dr. Sujata to remain motivated towards her work. ‘Her name and life story was published in international Book’. Her philosophy and lifelong project are best expressed in the motto penned by her for Tapan Rehabilitation Society, “Every individual is unique and can contribute to society in a meaningful way if given right input at the right time.” Our society needs more dedicated people like Dr. Sujata.
